The "Jolly Push-Pull Fisherman" (1994)

Image
The very first appearance of Class 33 locomotives at Skegness took place on Saturday 8th January 1994, when 33109 and 33116 worked the Hertfordshire Railtours "Jolly Push-Pull Fisherman" from Waterloo. It was intended to be 2 x 4TC sets, but one had developed a fault and had been removed from the consist. The following illustrate it before its return to King's Cross.  More information about the tour can be  found here.

Thursday 16th August 1984, and 47459 at the head of a rake of Mk.2 air conditioned stock at Skegness. It would depart later as the MThO 1M45 1845 through train to Burton-on-Trent. A bit of a change from 2x Class 20's and Mk.1's normally on the service in this era.

37042 at Skegness (1985)

Image
Aptly illustrating the busy nature of summer Saturdays at Skegness station in the 1980's; 37042 is seen after arrival on platform 5 having worked the 1E17 0710 summer Saturday  through train from Sheffield on 20th July 1985. It would be a quick turnaround: Once all passengers had alighted, it would reverse into the carriage sidings for the locomotive to be detatched, then reattached to the front end. After reversing back into platform 5, loaded with outgoing passengers, thence off at 1043 with the 1E02 service to Sheffield, non-stop to Nottingham. 37042 entered service on 15th June 1962, as D6742. It has since been preserved.

47283 at Skegness (1984)

Image
Skegness on Saturday 7th July 1984. 47283 had arrived with the 1E85 0932 SO from Derby earlier. Passengers having alighted, the empty train has reversed into the carriage sidings and the locomotive detatched and moved forward. Senior Railman John Thornley (seen on the left of the picture), has been appointed  shunter for the day, and is about to pull the lever to change the points to allow the locomotive to travel on a parallel siding, and then be attached to the other end. It will then reverse back into the station to form the 1M35 1238 SO service to Derby. 47283 was built at Crewe Works, entering service on 17th January 1966 as D1985. It was withdrawn on 31st August 2004 and scrapped on 30th September of the same year.

47484 at Skegness (1984)

Image
Saturday 23rd June 1984, and Old Oak Common based 47484 is at Skegness to work the 1A38 0946 to King's Cross. This was one of the few trains which, rather than the sidings, used the now removed crossover between platforms 4 and 5 to position the locomotive at the front end. The summer Saturday morning through train to King's Cross was introduced in 1980 and continued up to 1984. After a year of haitus, in 1986 it was replaced by a morning departure to York in 1986, Leeds in 1987, and Newcastle upon Tyne from 1988. 47484 was built at the Crewe Works, entering service on 27th February 1965 as D1662. Some time after my photographs were taken, it was repainted into green for the GWR 150th Anniversary in 1985. It was withdrawn on 1st June 1998, and is currently awaiting restoration. 47484 and its train after arriving on the 5A38 ECS from Nene Sidings, Peterborough. Having negotiated the crossover from Platform 4 to 5, the locomotive awaits being reattached. Senior Railma
